Wind in the Windows
Last-ditch fixes before you replace leaky old windows
I live in an older apartment that faces the wind. My windows are
like a smaller version of the sliding doors you would find to a balcony
or patio. I've tried to seal the windows with a sheet of heavy clear
plastic but the wind keeps pulling it off. How can I keep the wind out?

Tom Silva replies: You need new windows. But if you're not prepared
to make that investment, there are a number of things you can do to keep
air out. Getting a storm window is the first and simplest option. You
should also try weatherstripping around the sash. If you're willing to
do a little more work, you can remove the interior trim and insulate
around the window with foam insulation. (You can buy this in a can at
most hardware and home stores.) However, use this sparingly because you
could make the window so tight that you can't open it. And you don't
want to solve one problem by causing another.
