I have a house with a walkout basement. Because of this the side of my house is sloped. The previous homeowners had attempted to do some landscaping (created a 4 foot wide bed going down the slope with black lawn edging) but there is all kinds of runoff and the edging is coming up.
I was thinking of building three teired beds down the slope to level it off and prevent runoff and add some intrest. Will most likely use Cedar or Ground Treated Pressure Treated Lumber to create the boxes.
My questions are. Should I build a 4 sided box? Or can I do a three sided box while using the foundation of my house as a 4th side.
Also what should I do to avoid foundation problems? Should I tar the foundation? Add drainage to the boxes?
I don't plan on going crazy on the landscaping and throwing in a bunch of plants that will need watered daily. It is pretty shaded so probably just a large hosta or two in each box and just let rain water do all the watering.
