Can a Dishwasher be installed underneath a Fuse Box? I have a cabinet in my Kitchen that I want to remove and put a dishwasher in place, but is this against code? I live in New Jersey, USA.

James,

There is no specific code requirement for the minimum distance from a plumbing fixture to an electric panel, but nothing is allowed to be installed in a working space 2’-6” wide by 3’-0” deep by 6’-6” high in front of an electric panel. The panel does not have to centered in the 2’-6” width of the working space. So one side of a sink could align (but not overlap) with a side of an electric panel.

The other question is, do you have a dedicated circuit for the dishwasher? That is required, and it Must be a GFCI breaker or outlet. I suggest that you install a means of disconnect for that circuit close, within 3 feet, of the appliance. That is code. Some would say the use of a 15 amp circuit is enough, but it depends on the dishwasher. I recommend using a 20 amp dedicated circuit using at least #12 wire. The tech spec manual will indicate the correct amperage required
