Fan/Dimmer Switch
KeithW

I'm looking for a fan control/light dimmer combo switch like the below except the light dimmer be a 3-way vice a single-pole.

Do they make them? I really want the switch as one unit and not have to change out the box to put in a separate fan control and dimmer switch.

So if I wasn't clear my wiring is going to look like this:

Fan/Light on a fan control switch and the light on a dimmer 3way to another dimmer.

I'm just looking for a single switch to do this. Lutron has what I'm looking, BUT I can only find a single pole version.

Using two 3-way switches you can only dim from one location. You can look on Home Depots web site for other opcions.

Not true. Found one, though it puts the fan on a 3-way control as well. And pricey! But hey...you only remodel once...right? just one time right?! lol

I'm glad you found what you where looking for Keith. Do you wire that like a regular 3-way switch? Can the other 3-way be a dimmer?

not wired yet, i had to special order it from HD. my only concern is whether the wire from the main switch to the companion switch will also have to be 3wire. I only have a two wire from the main switch to the 2nd box.

Got your answer now.

Everything can be 2 wire, in fact I didn't even use the red wire at the main switch, I just capped it.

There's a unit that sits in the fan in line with the wiring that has a red, black, yellow, and red wire.

black hooks up to the black obviously.
white connects to white from switch and white from fan. it's the only connection other than ground that has 3 wire's together.
yellow connects to black on fan (fan)
red connects to black/white on fan (light)

you can control the lights and fan independently from either switch. Yes, both switches can dim the lights and control the fan speed. When you use the companion switch, the master switch light lvl will change showing you the level you have the fan or light set at. it's pretty great, pricey, but great. :)

I use the Lutron MA LFQ3. It is about $100, but the money it saves my customers in running new wires is well worth it. Home Depot can get them.

That sounds like the ticket, thank for the info.

this was the switch i'm talking about. It was the 3rd post (my 2nd) after I'd found a single switch to do what i was looking for.
