my main shutt off valve to my house has a gate valve. Could that cause my pipes to rattle if it has gone bad?
If it is in the full-open position, I don't think so. They can cause a groaning sound if they are only slightly open. Main way for a gate valve to go bad is that they freeze in the open or shut state. If you have a pressure regulator on the service line, that could have failed and cause a hammering perhaps.
