Just cut down fence. How do I get rid of the stumps?
Scott

Hello
I just disassembled my fence, and cut the posts at ground level. This left me with about 2 inches of 4x4 fence post sticking out. my question is how can I get those below ground so no one trips on them. i have drilled a good size hole through the middle of them. Any ideas?

It would have been better to leave a couple feet of post sticking up so you could dig and wiggle the posts to get them out. Digging them out or digging and cutting off a few inches below the ground would at least get them out of the way. A sawsall would be easiest and the blades are cheap.
I assume they aren't set in concrete. If they are busting up the top few inches and cutting would get them below the surface.
I would probably dig and pull out. Utilizing a lever like a post remover might help.

Two ways:
1. Dig it out.
2. Dig around the post stump deep enough to have a reciprocating saw blade cut it down below grade. If the posts are in concrete, break the concrete up with a sledge hammer.

My CDO (see my signature line ) won't allow post cores to remain behind, I always remove them. Maybe your CDO isn't as overpowering and you can just dig down below the surface of the ground and use a hammer to break any concrete and cut down any remaining wood, then cover up the remains.

Not trying to sound like Captain Obvious, but it is 10 times easier to remove the intact post than it is to cut it off and attack the stumps later. When the hole post is pulled out, you get more leverage in wiggling it and more to grab onto. At that point you can use an old tire rim and a chain to pull it up and out with a truck or tractor.

Now that the deed has been done, you are left with a lot of digging, sawing, and possibly sledge hammering (if they were set in cement). There is no art or magic method, just good old-fashioned grunt work.

Did you mean that you drilled a hole horizontally? If that's the case, you could insert a hefty piece of rebar and hook up a chain, then use the tire rim method mentioned above, or even better, a tractor's front-end loader or a backhoe.

Stump Out I have found works really well but it takes some time to kill the roots and make the stump rot.

ffs, you know there are fence post pullers you can rent or buy!

But they are useless on your "stumps" I guess we'll have to call you Stumpy.

I was under the impression that he was asking about "post stumps" not "tree stumps", since he mentioned nothing about cutting trees.

Whatever it is, he is not around to make it clear. Moving on...

I'm with you. Many first time posters never seem to check back. Why bother I wonder.
