Masonry Question
vickygg

Hi.......my husband and I want to do new england field stone and blue stone on our existing concrete front steps. We have gotten several proposals from masons to do the job. Two of the masons are suggesting stone veneer and two are not. They are suggesting stone and not veneer. The reasoning has to do with our winters here in Rhode Island. They state that veneer is not going to hold up and that it will crack and buckle. Other masons are saying that if it is treated with a coating yearly there should be no problem. Obviously the cost of "real" stone vs. stone veneer is double the price. I would like to keep the price down but do not want problems down the road; if this is not the best application for this part of the country. I will say that I have a "real stone" walkway and that is buckling so not sure if the whole veneer thing is even an issue. Any thoughts? thanks.

Sealed every year with what, and at what cost? How many years of this sealing has to be done to equal just using real stone and never looking back? How hard are you going to be on the area in question, high traffic, low traffic, kids, animals???? The higher the traffic the more you want to go with real stone and forget about maintenance and upkeep. With low traffic you can probably get away with veneer. Ultimately, it is a personal choice.
