Move-In Rituals?

Deborah Snoonian, Senior Editor at - saboteamos.info wants to know:

Do you have any special rituals or habits when moving into a house or starting a new project? For example, eating picnic-style on the floor on the first night, writing your name on the doorjamb, or having your clergyman bless your house...

The only ritual I have is to make sure I can pay the rent or mortgage payment!! Everything else will take care of itself!

When ever we move into a new house which is not to often. We make sure we get our house 'blessed' by the priest first thing. Whom wrights over the inside of the front door and puts the sighn of the cross. 'Bless this old house'.

I have a pair of 501's (jeans) that caught on a nail and kept me from sliding off the roof a few years back, so ever since then, when I'm starting a larger project, I get out the 'project jeans' and wear them the first day, and sometimes throughout the whole project depending. As a side benefit, my wife and kids get a kick out of all the "call the paramedics and tell them to get the 'project stretcher' ready" jokes when they see the jeans come out of the drawer.

i guess this is more family orientated since that is when to have the pony keg and moving in of boxes. simple, drunk, and i know not very intelligent. i said, it works for me.

moving in: the place has to be cleaned from top to bottom before anything gets moved in. I did the same when I moved in/out of all the rent houses.

Most of the time I would paint too but the closing ate into our budget in this house.

Starting a new project: I make an announcement a month before to make sure none of my lay about friends and family will come near my house until after it's done. I'm the foreman and they don't like it when I tell them where to leave off on the criticisms of my ideas and work.

After a new project: I invite everyone over to see the work, with plenty of warnings about criticism. More than one man has been escorted to the door when he told me I did something wrong.

Knowing the chaos that can and does happen every time we move, I always pack a suitcase or duffel bag for each family member as if we were going on a long weekend trip. These few items we bring with us personally so that we know exactly where they are. That way, we each have enough clothes and toiletries to get us through the first few days until we have found and organized our things.

We grab a pizza after the closing and take it to the new house and eat it on the living room floor. Then before we move anything in we walk through the house praying and asking for God to bless the home and everyone who enters in it. - Tonya Kimbrel

The first few days in a new house are always busy and so exciting! I've only done this twice, but it was fun both times (in hindsight, of course). The first days are spent in my "leadpaint" clothes, armed with a flashlight, digital camera, tape measure, small booklet, and pencil/pen. I take pictures of EVERYTHING and document the dimensions of rooms and windows, things in need of repair, etc. I make sure to get into the nooks and crannies of the basement and attic, or other deep and dark corners. Next, I clean everything from top to bottom. Doing this usually causes the "things in need or repair" list to expand considerably. Once everything is clean I am free to unpack. The door trim usually ends up with paint chips stuffed behind it and the rooms are painted as colors inspire me, with the worst rooms painted ASAP. The booklet comes in handy when going to the store in that I know what I need, how many, what size, etc. Window dimensions are useful for buying rods and window coverings, and I tape the paint chip in the booklet so that I am sure they will match. My grandma always said a house does not looked lived in until the curtains are hung.

Before I actually move things in, I smudge with white sage and sweet grass to clear the energy of anyone that was there before. Then we say a blessing for what we wamt to experience living in the new space ie. "May prosperity, good health and love grow in this home."

When I have moved into a home in the past (always rentals) I clean top to bottom. Then move in the big stuff and order pizza.
After remarrying and we purchased our first home together we have started the once in a lifetime feat. Hubby and I will go from closing right to the new home and eat on the dining room floor. So quiet and enjoying the new home and NO kids running underfoot. :D
