New deck boards are a little higher than my back door threshold?

New deck boards are a little higher than my back door threshold?

Hi, new here and was hoping someone could help me with my problem.

My new cedar deck boards, (5/4x6) ended up a little higher than my back door threshold, about 1/2 inch. Anyone have suggestions as to how to fix this problem with out tearing the door or the whole deck out? I should mention that there is a two-foot over hang where the door is located.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Short of redoing the entire deck with thinner material, either notch or bevel the board in front of the door. The one thing you DO NOT want to do is create a toe biter, so you may need to do a combination of notching and beveling.

This is a major deficiency. I don't think there is a remedy that will be OK here, except the obvious: using narrower deck boards or lowering the deck by about 3/4". Don't even think on adjusting the door.

An half inch drop (from the house to the deck) is fine, but what you have is, what's the word, CARAMBA.

Thanks everyone for your comments. I did find out there is room to raise the door. After removing the trim and a little drywall, I found that there is about 1 1/2 inches between the top of the door and the header. So maybe rasing the door is a option, we will see.

Although I haven't decided what to do as yet, the deck is over 700 square feet and I wont be removing and rebuilding it over the 1/2 inch difference between deck boards and door threshold. I'm sure I can find a solution that satisfies both the safety and cosmetic concerns.

That said... thank you again for the comments and I am still open to any creative solutions someone may have to offer.

Anyone know why I can't upload a jpg image of this threshold?

The easiest way to show a picture is to link to a photo on sharing site like photobucket.
Other than rebuilding the deck or moving the door the only other two things I can think of are:
Putting a good bevel on the deck board so it isn't a toe stubber. This assume the door opens in. Create a gap between the threshold and board so water doesn't drain under the door. This could always be a problem if the door sweep doesn't seal tight.
Remove the door and cut off and inch or two then build up the threshold to match the new size. This may not be possible. If it's a slider it can't be done. Don't forget to properly flash the new built up threshold.
