strong cabbage smell coming from kitchen drain

What could be the cause of an unbearable cabbage smell from my kitchen drain. This problem only started a few days ago. Pouring boiling vinegar or boiling water down the drain does not cure the problem.

I have also had small black flies in the house for a couple of weeks. I don't know of these problems are related to one another.

Thank you.

More info is needed, like:

- Do you have a garbage disposer?
- If you do, how old is it?
- Do you use it daily or only when it's full?

- Do you have a slow drain?

- Look at the roof over the kitchen - do you have a vent?

Drain flies. They breed in the gunk in your drain, like greasy soap residue, hair, whatever clumps up. You need to clean out whatever is in your drain with something long and thin; whatever you can get in there with and pull the gunk out. Then use the vinegar and hot water.
