Richard Trethewey looks back on some energy-saving advice that has stood the test of time
It’s always a good day for Richard Trethewey when he can help homeowners find ways to make their houses more energy efficient.
So important is this topic that from time to time, Ask TOH has produced an Energy Efficiency Special, such as Season 7, Episode 7. For that episode, Richard showed a homeowner how to install a weather-responsive control with an outdoor sensor for his boiler. “Heating systems are designed for the worst-case scenario, the coldest day of the year, but that means the boiler fires to a higher temperature than it really needs to all year long,” explains Richard.
A weather-responsive control includes a sensor for the outdoor temperature so the boiler will only fire to the temperature needed. Says Richard: “Installing a weather-responsive control gives you comfort and also efficiency, and can reduce fuel costs by 10 to 15 percent.”
Other tips in this special include adding programmable thermostats; adding foil tape or sealant to ductwork to help reduce leaks; insulating pipes; and adding weatherstripping to doors, windows, outlets, and other gaps.
