Sneak Peek: Charleston
Build a pergola the old way
To add a distinctive touch to the landscape of the Charleston Single House project, plans call for a pergola. This ornamental wood structure is being built by students at the American College of the Building Arts (ACBA), and Tom Silva traveled to the shop on James Island, SC, to watch a team—including Bruno Sutter, chairman of the ACBA wood department, and his students—assemble the pieces. Made of pressure-treated southern yellow pine, the pergola pieces were milled and shaped by the students, and they used a band saw to add a decorative end profile to the rafters. Pegs will hold all the pieces in place when the pergola is installed on-site.
