Sneak Peek—Idea House: Narragansett Neighborhood
Exploring the history of the homes surrounding the 2018 Idea House
- saboteamos.info’s 2018 Idea House is a Craftsman-style cottage being built within a stone’s throw of Narragansett’s Central Street Historic District. This multi-block district includes summer houses built primarily in the late 1870s to 1890s, when the town was gaining popularity as a Victorian seaside resort.
The homes range in size and style; some are simply classic Colonial-style wood-frame houses given a crisp summer look with painted white clapboards and black painted shutters; others are rambling shingled houses with fieldstone foundations, broad porches, decorative brackets, and multiple turrets and gables. Throughout the neighborhood, common elements include dry-laid stone walls, thick hedges, gateposts, and mature trees. (Indeed, the Idea House is on a property with an original stone wall adding old-age character to the new cottage.)
Best of all, the neighborhood is within an easy walk of Narragansett Town Beach, a classic New England saltwater beach that’s a favorite with surfers.
