Update: Generation NEXT
Meet our new apprentices on the Jamestown job site
Two new apprentices are on the TOH scene, keeping the focus on the future of the building trades. At the Jamestown, RI, project, general contractor Jeff Sweenor has the help of Mary McGuire Smith, from Tupelo, MS, and Kevin Barker, of Jamestown, RI. Both answered a casting call for TOH apprentices, and although their backgrounds are quite different, they share a passion for building houses.
Mary operated a bakery in her hometown for years, all the while using her bakery earnings to buy tools for do-it-yourself projects. Now, after selling the business, she is turning her attention to learning all she can on the job site—and planning to become a full-time general contractor.
Kevin has been working in the building trades for the past six years, and sees the TOH opportunity as one in which he can expand his skills.
On a recent day at the Jamestown site, the two did everything from installing sheathing and roofing to carting timbers from one end of the site to the other. “It’s an amazing experience being here, and I still can’t really believe it’s happening,” says Mary.
