Put down the base coat, and allow it to dry at least 24 hours. Measure the width of the porch, and choose a width for the bands that will allow an even number across the floor. Use a tape measure and chalk to mark them off.

Tape off the bands, placing the tape consistently outside the bands you are about to paint.

Fill a tray with stain tinted in a contrasting shade, and use a roller to paint every other band.

When the stain is almost dry and a bit tacky, gently pull up the tape at an angle.
